Buying a Used Car? 12 Things to Check Before You Pay

A fresh coat of paint hides a lot. Here's what doesn't lie.

Before the Meeting

  1. Search the registration number online to verify ownership
  2. Cross-check chassis and engine numbers with documents
  3. Look up the make/model's known problem areas

At the Meeting

  1. Check the chassis number physically โ€” look for signs of welding or re-stamping
  2. Check all four tires: same brand and wear pattern suggests regular maintenance
  3. Open every door, check that gaps are even โ€” uneven gaps suggest accident repairs
  4. Look under the car for rust, leaks, or misaligned components
  5. Start cold โ€” a warm engine at "first start" means they're hiding cold-start problems
  6. Check AC, all windows, all lights, all buttons

On the Test Drive

  1. Accelerate hard โ€” hesitation or smoke is a red flag
  2. Brake hard from 60km/h โ€” car should stop straight, no pulling
  3. Listen for knocks, rattles, or whining sounds at different speeds

The Documents Check

Verify: original registration book (not a copy), engine transfer papers if applicable, no outstanding token tax.

A PKR 3,000-5,000 mechanic inspection before purchase is the best money you'll spend on a used car. Any seller who refuses to allow an inspection is hiding something.
